Up and Down - Where She goes Nobody Knows!

Sun Jun 30 2019 03:49:00 GMT-0500 (Central Daylight Time)

The wind died almost completely last night but left the big choppy seas. I motor sailed best I could. The relentless clanging and snapping then took on a new tone at daybreak. Upon inspection I found a twofold problem. The mainsail jiffy reefing clew line had parted along with the mainsheet traveler attachment point. In other words the main boom was flailing in the big chop like a pirate being flogged.

A shackle had come loose and bent open. Fortunately I had installed extra padeyes earlier in the voyage for this very reason. It was a very dangerous process to lasso the wildly swinging boom and tame it. I then dug through misc hardware to find a replacement shackle. All along the deck was trying it's best to throw me off or knock me out.

Eventually I succeeded also having reattached the parted reefing line. This process is one I wish on no one. A few minor cuts and bruises later I fired up iron genny (engine) and went to sleep wallowing along in the Azores sea swamp.

The wind is back to barely hold course but is expected to pick up later so I shut down iron genny. Just made freeze dried breakfast and turning in for a few much needed zzz's.

It's been 1826 nm from Bermuda with around 175 nm to go. This voyage has been a test of willpower. Never fully asleep, never fully awake!

Have a smooth Sunday, ps

Under a hunderd! What would you do?

Sun Jun 30 2019 17:41:00 GMT-0500 (Central Daylight Time)

97 nm to go! Wind is light, fuel is OK! My rush is to come in Horta in daylight. I have no idea what customs hours are or even if they have hours. But I'm motorsailing unless the wind picks up to make it in daylight.

I don't relish sitting offshore bouncing around waiting. We're on the final streth. We've sailed through thick and thin. Why not splurge a bit at the end of the leg!

Wish this was two way conversation but it's not. I'll take your word for it.

See you in Horta, Azores tomorrow or bust!!!

Fridge top was a handy area to brace myself working on smaller items.
